June 27, 2004Hey fellas, whats going on? Today I started my first, somewhat, project on my 94 Red Silverado. I started to replace my headliner. So far I have managed to get the headliner off of the ceiling and I have stripped the fabric off of it. I plan on going to the upholstry shop tomorrow and picking up some new fabric and some adhesive spay glue. I may also pick up some memory foam because I think that I am going to try to mold a chevy emblem in the ceiling. As I said, this is the first mod that I have tried myself so I am pretty excited but I need some pointers. Is there any tricks or anything that I need to remember before putting the new fabric on. Any advise or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.
June 27, 2004Another thing that I was wondering also, I am thinking about replacing my vinyl floor with a carpet kit. I have seen them on the internet for as cheep as 100. Is this a good price or should I be cautious about buying one of these.
June 28, 2004Sorry I can't help ya' out, seems you're the 1st I've heard of trying to replace a headliner. Some what of a pioneer if you think about it! Keep us updated.
June 28, 2004You need to buy REALLY REALLY strong glue. that 3m stuff doesn't work. We tried re-covering the headliner in out 79, but it didn't turn out so we said screw it and now have a metal celing.
June 28, 2004I think as long as ya have good glue you should okay. I just had mine redone at a upholstery shop. We weren't brave enough to tackle it.
Best of luck to ya and keep us posted on how it turns out. Oh yeah the carpet. Thats seems like a pretty good price for one.
June 29, 2004Well, here's the update. I tried to put the new fabric down on my headliner today. It didn't go as great as I expected it to. I ran into several problems so if anyone out there is going to try to custom their own headliner I can tell you some stuff to watch out for. My original idea was to put down a chevy emblem and mold it into the fabric. To do this I bought a foam sleep mat that is used for camping. It was about a half inch to 3/4 which was perfect for the job. If anyone is trying to do this mod I suggest this stuff. The glue stuck on it really well and it molded into the fabric great. The problem that I ran into was that I didn't round off the edges of the bowtie so the fabric didn't stick to the emblem too well around the edges. To do this right you need to really take some pains to get the foam logo cut right. I didn't do this and it cost me. Next, the glue that I used was super strong and it did a great job. I got the 3M stuff but I spent the extra money and bought the heavy duty glue for heavy headliners. My problem was that I put it too thick in one place and it bled through. I didn't need to use alot because the stuff stuck really well. I should have misted the whole thing evenly.
Since I screwed this stuff up I had to scrap the fabric and the idea to mold the chevy logo onto the roof. It sucks cause I really wanted to try this mod. There isn't a doubt in my mind that I can put just the fabric up but I just thought that I'd let you know my progress. I have access to a cam so I'll take some pictures of it when I finish the project tomorrow.
June 30, 2004Here is mine.
Like they say we learn from out mistakes. At least now you have a good idea of how to do the next one.
June 30, 2004I did my own and it came out great. I didn't try anything fancy, just cleaned off the old material and replaced it with the material I got from a trim shop we use. I used 3m and it worked great. It's been over a year and it looks as good as new.
June 30, 2004Well, like I said, I decided to ditch the chevy emblem in the headliner which I really wanted to do. I think that my trouble from this came because I didn't get a good foam cut out. I found a headliner website that had some foam chevy emblems that you could buy that was designed for this sort of project. I tried to make my own and it didn't turn out. Anyway I just covered the headliner with some new fabric and it turned out pretty good.
It's not too bad for my first headliner, what do you think?
July 1, 2004Looks good to me. You did a great job.
July 1, 2004I have to do the same to my 1990 Sierra Ext Cab, but i had to order a new headliner since mine was all messed up. Going to recover it with different material, the same material I'm going to do my seats in.
September 18, 2004what was the website for the shop that had the chevrolet emblems?
