December 14, 2011I have noticed this before in the past but it was never regular. When i come to a complete stop and then release the brakes to take off i here a clucnk or pop noise fromt he front end. one time it seems like it is on the passenger side the other the driver. some times i here it as soon as i release the brake pedal but usually i release the brake and when i push the accelerator i here it. could my pads be sticking in the calipers and need greased or somethin?

December 14, 2011Mine did something similar and it turned out to be the slip yoke on the drive shaft. Packing it with grease solved that problem. Maybe yours is the same problem because it is hard to really tell where the sound is coming from.
December 17, 2011is there anyway to check to see if it is. it is a little strange because this morning on my way to work it really didnt make the sound but it seems that after i drive it a while it will.
I guess taking the driveshaft off to grease it isnt very hard, what kind of grease is recommended.
December 23, 2011Ha! i came on here to post this same topic today and sure enough here it is!
I also have the classic slip yoke problem but in the last few months i have noticed that my brake pads seem to be sticking as well. i have had the slip yoke clunk for several years now and i know this to be different.
the reason i can tell is that when i release the brake pedal, the truck doesnt immediately move until the "pop" happens up front.
i believe it to be the calipers, not the pads that are actually sticking. I replaced the calipers about a year ago with the LLT warranty brand from oreilly and figured they would go out on me eventually.
I will be taking them back as soon as we get a warm day to work on the truck.....
My question to you is, have you replaced the pads/calipers recently (lets say within the last 18 months)???
Id like to know if your problem is the same as mine.....
December 23, 2011Oh! and masterdeluxe is also correct. the grease listed works really well for the slip yoke, as ive done that before too. May have even gotten the grease to use from him in the past. I did, however, have to redo about every 3 months for it to keep working....
December 24, 2011i took the truck to a shop and they looked it over and said that the noise is coming from the rear differential. They said that some time when the truck was serviced they didnt put in the right additive in the rear end so the clutches of the limited slip are worn badly and that the noise is from extra slop in the differential when it is loaded and unloaded. (stopping and starting) They also said that the rear end of these truck has a tendancy to go out, is this true. I have an appointment to switch out the differential with a different style of limited slip.
I have had the issue for a while that the truck didnt turn well and seemd to just like to slide. the shop said that was probably because the clutches were worn and werent releasing or slipping like they were supposed to. so maybe this will stop the noise and make the truck handle better as well.
anybody think i am gettign ripped off let me know other wise i will let you knwo if it fixed everything.
December 25, 2011You are talking about a rather expensive repair. It is worth trying the less expensive fixes first. Try greasing the slip joint Try changing the differential fluids and adding some additives that prevent slipping. If these fail then you can go with the more expensive change out. This may not be a permanent repair, but it will last a while and will answer the question if the differential needs replacing.
December 25, 2011I would try the less expensive repair first and may change the fluid..I drive a 00 1500 that has the limited slip rear end it has 256,000 on it and have never had a problem
January 15, 2012How much grease do i put into it, is there a possibility of putting to much in and it getting into the transfer case. I found one guy that tapped in a grease fitting on hte slip yoke flange so he could just put in a few pumps every so often instead of having to pull the drive shaft every so many months.
January 15, 2012It`s not that easy to do since the slip yoke is hardened steel and very hard to drill into. I have an extended cab with a 2 piece drive shaft and there is another slip yoke in the middle with a factory grease fitting where to the 2 shafts meet. The front slip yoke has to be pulled to be greased.
