February 16, 2011well, with my tex return i am planning on getting a few things taken care of, one, being my tires on my truck, 2 painting a tailgate that isn`t all dinged up and beat to hell and back like mine, and 3, getting a programmer for my truck. i am leaning towards the hypertech "Max energy power programmer" for my vortec 454, the extra power and MPG will be nice, but i am mostly looking for MPG, even 4 more mpg would be nice! i am curious if anyone has programmed their vortec 454, which one they used, and actual results? i am always on the cautious side of what factories claim their stuff will do, so i would like some input from someone who has done the vortec 454, or really anyone thats done it to their trucks and what they actually got vs what was advertised. also curious if anyone has used the superchips or the JET programmers? and what their experience with them may be....

February 16, 2011I have a hypertech on my 5.3 its amazing on the 5.3 only downside is I tend to use more gas cus its faster lol the tunability is amazing though I get wayyyyyy better mileage now. Easily 4-6 mpg difference
February 17, 2011well, i know alot of the same technology is in both of our engines, so i should be able to expect a bump as well. i`ll be happy to get 15 mpg, lol. but we will know here in another week or so. lol
February 17, 2011I used to own a Crane Cams Tuner. I specifically bought that one because I was planning on getting a cam installed and I also could turn up my idle. I loved it, but then I heard about a custom tune for your PCM. Wheatley Tune is what I have in there now, I`d say the custom tune felt like it double in power compared to a hand held tuner!
I would look into a custom tune as well as a hand held programmer, weight the differences - then decide Loki
February 17, 2011custom is more bang for the buck!
February 17, 2011where do you even go for a custom tune?? how much is something like that.. Might be something i should look into?? i can always sell my hypertech for more then i even have into it.
February 18, 2011I got a Wheatley Tune, when he first started his tuning business.
Go Wheatley Tuning
I`ve heard good things from Black Bear Tunes, but I have personally never used their product, so I can`t comment on them.
Black Bear Performance Tuning
You will not be disappointed!
February 18, 2011blackbear has a new auto tune. its like a hand held but you hook it to your truck log your driving, e mail the data, then he makes a tune to your drive and vehicle. then he e mails this to you and you can have a few different tune backed up on disc or you computer and upload the tune through the device to your truck. so if you change some thing or mod he just e mails you the change. or traditional tune. really cool shit.....wheatley is great too.
February 18, 2011Man thats pretty exspensive. Is it like crazy more power then traditional programmer?? Im thinking Ill stick with my hypertech for now. It does fine for me for the $50 i bought it for
February 19, 2011well, i think i will be getting a hypertech here next week. i was picking up some rental equipment for one of the companies i work with and i was talking to one of the rental companies shop mechanics, and he mentioned he had a 96 chevy vortec 454 hypertech programmer. he sold the truck but kept the programmer, and would sell it for $50, so i think for that price as long as its in good working order it would be hard to say no. as long as he reset his truck before he sold it, it should be fine for my truck to my knoledge, (as they save the OEM settings with VIN IDs in their), meaning if its not reset, it cant reset my truck to factory settings as my truck is the wrong VIN, making it useless to me. I also have a buddy who`s brother used to be a manager at a local truck shop that is a hypertech distributor, so i`m going to talk to him and see if i can`t get a discount for a new one. i`d rather have a new one as hypertech support won`t help you without a receipt. they are really picky so i`ve been told.....
February 19, 2011Yeah there VIN locked and you won`t need any help from hypertch its amazingly easy to do, its a simple yes no things. And the rest you can play with for the best of what you want. It took me a few different times to get it where I wanted it.
