October 28, 201003 4L60E revs hard in first then goes straight to third. Computer shows it is shifting into second. Changed 1-2 shift solenoid, valve is working. Did not fix problem. It acts like maybe solenoid is not getting signal from computer to shift. Any suggestions on where to look Next.Maybe a wiring problem?

October 28, 2010I`d check all wiring to and from the trans, twice over just in case just to save yourself $$. Also, Have you beat on the tranny? towing, plowing, off roading?? Just trying to narrow it down more to see if you blew the trans a lil bit...Best of luck with fixin it!
October 28, 2010Usually those trannies lose 2nd and OD together. You need a rebuild. I had a 97 with the 4L60E and it lost 2nd and OD and then R and 1st started grinding. The longer it does it the more damage. Don`t go to the cheapest independent shop. I did that one once too. Ask around and find a reputable independent shop or go to Aamco or Cottman or some national chain. I prefer independent shops for price and quality, but if you move frequently as I do a national chain warranty is good also.
October 29, 2010No offroading , towing, etc. It just started doing it one day while driving on the road. Truck only has 47k miles on it and has always been treated good. It does have 37" tires on it though, so it is pulling a lot of weight around.

October 29, 2010factory 3:73 its still right peppy, but i want to put 4:88 in it to return it to more stock ratio with the big tires.
October 29, 2010I believe thats where your problem lies... 3.73` and 37`s. Not exactly a great combo, i had 3.73 and 38`s for a few years.. i am sure my trans isnt in as good as shape now..
October 29, 2010Your rear end is not suitable for 4.88 gears 4.56 may take care of it but 1/2 ton axles are designed for any gear steeper than 4.56. It puts more torque in there than the differential is designed to handle.

October 29, 2010You can find a 14 bolt axle 6 lug from a 199* to 2000 2500 series and swap your axles over and get steeper gears. Those years some 2500LD had 6 lug axles that will accommodate steeper gears than the 12 bolt 1500 axles.
November 2, 2010Took the truck to a transmission shop this morning.Was told that the second gear band was worn and a pin not engaging, and there was a lot of junk from the band in the valve body. was told I need a complete rebuild for $1900. I thought this sounded a little expensive.Who makes a good heavy duty kit to put in this unit that is better than stock components.
November 6, 2010$1900 is a fair price if they are going to remove rebuild and reinstall the tranny for you. The dealer tranny is over $2400 and it is re-manufactured and then you have to pay for installation. I would ask the tranny shop about corvette servos that will make it shift more aggressively. I had Vette Servos and a Trans-Go Shift kit in my 97 Z-71 and also had the shift firmness turned up to max and shift points pushed up right below the rev limiter by a custom tuner for all the other work I put into the engine and tranny.
