August 17, 2010If your headlight is dirty... as in dirt/grime inside it...
You can probably remove the headlight, and use something like CLR or Simple Green.. and some soft pipe-cleaners to give it a gentle scrub inside.
Dry thoroughly, re-install and re-aim.
August 17, 2010Hey thanks for the help!geuninely appreciated ...Dude, I wasn`t sure about it so you have eased me into the job.The pin lets the h/l fall out?And you leave the bulbs and harness intact , just hangin? And btw , some bulbs you can`t touch as your finger print gets hot and the bulb dies .Would these be this kind of bulb?
where are you at
August 17, 2010I think the safest way to do it would be to remove the bulbs from the headlight, and then remove the headlight assembly from the truck.
If you have Halogen bulbs, you`re right.. touching the bulb itself can damage it. Its the oils in the human skin that leave a "stain" on the glass... creating a hot spot.. and then failure of the bulb. An easy way to protect the bulb is to simply slip a clean plastic baggie (sandwich bags work great) over the bulb and twist-tie it to keep it in place. You can leave the bulb connected to wiring if you wish. Just make sure the bulbs are cold before you bag them. *lol*
Before you do get into this... run your hand across the front of the lense. If it feels a bit rough, then chances are that the lense could be dirty from the outside. You can try the 3M Headlight Restoration Kit... and buff out any blemishes in the lenses. Shouldn`t take more than 20 minutes to do a great job with that kit.
If your lenses are dirty from the inside - give them a good rinse from the inside and outside. You can use soft pipe-cleaners to gently scrub the inside of the lense. Just make sure they`re dry inside before you re-assemble.
If they are dirty inside, to me... that would indicate that they didn`t seal properly... not very common to have crud inside the housing... unless you`ve been under water.
August 17, 2010When i bought the truck they had just washed it. There was fog inside the lense, which quickly dispersed but that did occur to me, that i may have to reseal these once i`m done working with them and before i push them back in place. bob s again many thanks for your insight. And to show you what a small world it is , my wife has a cousin who runs a cosino in Sault Ste Marie......... And we have a cabin over by AuTrain jus past munising.aways bob s

August 17, 2010If you had fogging inside the lense, that definitely means they didn`t seal properly. You might have water spots or dirt inside, or a combination of both.
It sure is a small world! There are a few casinos in my area. On the Canadian side we have the OLGC Sault Ste. Marie casino site, and in Michigan there`s Vegas Kewadin in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan and Bay Mills in Brimley. All within 45 minutes of driving.
November 9, 2011Step 1: Remove headlights
Step 2: Remove bulbs
Step 3: Buy "Mother`s Plastic Polish" NOT a headlight restoration "kit"
Step 4: Buff outside surface of headlights with this product at high RPM on a drill...example: Zip tie on a T-shirt sleeve secured to a drill bit in a drill
Step 5: Now you can tell if the inside of your lens is also dirty. If it is still foggy, wrap a towel with some product on the top of a screwdriver. A long screwdriver. Stuff it in the light housing and wipe clean the inside as best you can with the screwdriver tip covered in towel or rag.
Step 6: If it is still dirty, you can take the lens cover apart. I DO NOT RECOMMEND TRYING THIS. They use very strong glue and you WILL break the lens.
This should dramatically increase visibility and looks. If you are still not satisfied then you can get new headlights for about $120-140
Edit- Obviously don`t push too hard with your drill and melt your housing cover...
Make a living living life.
