April 26, 2010Are cold air intake systems really worth... I mean do they really make that much of a difference in horsepower and gas mileage.

April 26, 2010i can`t say that it`s increased my mpg or my hp gain. if anyting it prob gave it an additional pony (not horses but pony. haha). but it sure sounds cool when you floor the gas pedal and listen to the air getting sucked in. you will feel a slight difference.
April 26, 2010helps throttle response some, get a dry filter one. imo
April 27, 2010here is my theory...
your stock intake-restricts the flow of air because of the turns and basically the whole design of it, but the stok airway brings in cool air from the grilll or fender ect. ect.
cold air intake- opens things up so there is WAY less air restriction, but the design of it sucks in the hot air from beside the motor...
in my opinion... they are basically a "cosmetic" upgrade... they look and sound cool, but your not going to see any real noticable power gains...
April 27, 2010u could always just buy the kn box filter for the stock air box. that will make a difference. i had one on my truck but i did recently go to an air intake and it works a little better than the kn filter for the stock box
April 28, 2010Volant air intakes are good they have the closed box kind of design, try a Ram Air kit, hpgains and mpg gains draws air from behind the headlight/grille area. If I had the extra cash I wouldve gotten that instead.
April 29, 2010i use a K&n filter in my stock box becuase it saves money over time from buying new fitlers if u keep trucks as long as i do...so essentially you may not save ureself money for MPG but ure saving money on filters cause a K&N runs about 60 and a cleaner kit is 11....a new fram filter is 20 so reuse the K&n 4 times and it pays for itself...15,000 miles times 4 is 60,000 miles so if u keep a truck 60,000 or longer the K&N pays off
September 21, 2010just get a k&n filter from autozone an bolt it to the throttle body
September 22, 2010i got the K&N filter in my stock air box and love not havin to replace the filter all the time since i live on gravel roads but i been wantin to get a new air intake setup though but am waitin until i get my cowl hood
September 24, 2010From a dyno standpoint, they will add aprox 2hp. A friend of mine has a dyno in his shop. I put a cheaper specter brand cold air intake kit and cowl hood on my 96 5.7 Vortec. The hood lets some of the heat out, we dyno`d the truck before and after (same day) and It showed a 2hp gain at the wheels, not much but something. For the money it comes out to more cosmetic than a big power adder. with the exhaust being done now and the computer, rear gears etc. I have added so far about 84hp. to my truck. Throttle response is noticeable however.
