March 10, 2010Ok guys.. this one has me stumped. I hope you can help. I bought this truck used in 2006 (04 ECSB 4x4, 5.3L, 80K miles) and shortly after I bought it, it started to make a moaning (dry rubbing) sound when turning the steering wheel. It seems to happen mostly at lower speeds and about an 1/8th of a turn either way is the worst, but is usually continues for the majority of a full rotation of the wheel. About a week ago, I replaced the intermediate shaft (had the clunking also) with a Dorman shaft from Rock Auto, and the clunking is gone, but the moaning, if anything, has gotten worse. At first I thought the noise was in the column, but after crawling under it tonight is seems to be coming from the steering gear / linkage somewhere, but I could not isolate it to any perticular place.
Any thoughts on what may be causing this, or has anyone experienced this and found a fix?
