February 26, 2010So I am deploying to Iraq in a couple weeks but theese are my plans for when I return. I am looking at a corsa exhaust(probably sport), superchips tuner(maybe custom tune), volant intake, and dynatech long tube with free flow cats. Not sure if I should even mess with headers at all. I have a `09 crew 5.3 Z71 with 3:42 gears, 6" lift with 35`s. Stock HP is 315(so about 280ish at the wheels) and my goal is to break 300 at the wheels. Also, will my 6 speed hydromatic tranny handle this ok. Oh and I tow about 5k lbs in quads and RZRs. would this be a good setup and should I go with the headers or not??

February 26, 2010If your running 35`s and 3.42`s and tow 5000, that is harder on the trany than 20 more horsepower. If you want to help the trans out use the money you where going to spend on the bolt-on`s and regear. That will make it alot quicker off the line too.
February 26, 2010I agree with the gear swap too. It will give you more noticable power off the bat and set a good starting point for other mods. Maybe a good trans cooler if you don`t have one already that way it will stay cool.
February 26, 2010I already have the HD trans cooler. I have thought about the gear change but the truck doesnt struggle at all when towing my 5k lbs and only typically downshifts one gear when going up steep hills on the freeway, I think because it is a six speed and maybe its coming out of overdrive or something but it tows great. So right now I am just concerned about the mods I listed complementing each other and the quality rating of my listed proposed mods. Thanks though and keep the comments coming, I love to get smarter.
February 27, 2010I would start with the exhaust then go with the air intake. Then do the tuner. If you want a custom chip you don`t need them until you do heads and a cam swamp. I`m not even sure there is custom chips for the newer years it`s all programable stuff.
February 27, 2010Actually if you look at the gear ratio of the new hydromatic 6-speeds their` final gear ratios in first and second are lower with 3.42s than what a 4L60e with 4.56s gears is. So the stress level in your tranny isn`t much as one would think with 35s...
That set-up will work amazing and do wonders to your truck, a lot of people with these new chevys, like yours, choose the Diablo predator for their prorammer. Its an awesome programmer and there product support is amazing. But if you want to do a bunch of work at once to make it an awesome all around truck I too would look into getting a new set of gears, 4.10s preferably, and a locker to top it off.
Where at in Kansas?
February 27, 2010I thought with the six speed it would make sense to gear it something like that. I will have to look it up soon.
I am stationed at FT Riley, live in Manhattan.
