there isnt much difference in the 2 neither will help you more than the other with MPG if its colder weather use the lighter 5 30 for cold starts or hotter use the 10 30 but it wont hurt if you use 5 30 or 10 30 no matter whatOctober 20, 2009
ok thanks. so for the winter use 5w 30 and use 10w 30 in summer? i live in Michigan if that has any relevance.October 20, 2009
Yes! In Michigan use 5w in winter!October 30, 2009
yeah maybe run a 5w-30 synthetic. I just put that into my silverado and i think it runs smoother. But it could all be in my head! haha.

5W is the cold viscosity of the oil when cold and 30 is the viscosity hot. Newer engines have closer tolerances and need the 5W for cold startup . You will be fine with the 5W 30 in Michigan.October 30, 2009
The reason manufacturers went to 5w30 was for fuel economy. The way I see it...if the engine was designed for it that`s what I`ll use.

I always use 5w30 in my truck. I use mobil 1 oil and wix filter. Get the oil at walmart and its a lot cheaper.October 30, 2009

Ill have to disagree with using 10w oil anytime in your truck. It was designed for 5w. In the summer 5w-30 is fine, in the winter 5w-30 is fine. Yes, use 5w-30 all the time. The engine is designed to use 5w-30 all teh time. Using anything else could affect your engine in a negative way. Prior to the 1950 it was common practice to switch oil grades, one for summer and one for winter. In the 50`s the dual purpose oil was introduced and made the practice of switching obsolete.October 3, 2010
I use 5w-20 Amsoil and I know my 01 4.8l silverado doesn`t burn oil anymore and stays cleaner longer and am at 20 mpg ...city when I`m not racing..lolWork hard play harder
