I have always used fine grae steel wool, with very light pressure, and also follow with any kind of chrome polish,or wax.It makes them shine nicely.Dont worry about scratching the finish with the steel wool.As long as you be patient, and dont put alot of pressure on it,you will be just fine.
I have used this trick on every one of my trucks.Works fine on chrome bumpers as well.

my dad uses a product called alumibright on his rollbackits some sort of acid
he gets it in a 1 gal container and puts it in a sprits bottle
squirt it on and washes it off right away and your done
can be use on aluminum and steel but try to keep it off the paint because it will stain the paint and if you leave it on to long it will stain the steel and aluminum

1990k1500 Glad to have you join our site. We have others on here from BCsteel wool and turtle wax are second to none when it comes to polishing old chrome. The that aluminum acid etcher, will eat paint up over time like u mentioned. I would just rather leave that far away from my truck.
