December 19, 2007Hey guys I have a 2001 Chevy Extended Cab with the 4.8 with 3.42s and with 305/40R22s and i want to know wants the best gears and later on will change the tire size to 265/40R22
December 19, 2007What are you primarily using your truck for?
December 19, 2007I'd go with the 3.73s then. People will have different opinions on gears, and I don't have any experience with regearing, but I've heard good things about Precision and Yukon.
December 20, 2007I still believe the 4.10's are the best choice. These trucks aren't light, and when you add the weight of the bigger tires, the 4.10's will take up the slack. Most people don't drive all highway, most is intown.. tooling around type driving. The gears will take less strain off the engine giving you better mileage and power.
I got decent mileage out of my 03 with 4.10's..
January 2, 2008Question: Will the lower gears put any more strain on the tranny?
January 2, 2008its very hard to have street performance and gas mileage
if ur driving alot id got for the 3:7.3 if ur guna be ripping alot 4.10
my dad has a 4.10 in his ext cab long bed 5.3 it gets pretty good mileage tho like 17 average i believe idk its up2 you dont forget if its a 4x4 have to take that in2 account
January 2, 20083.73 will get you better mileage on the highway, 4.10's will put less strain on your drivetrain in the city.
4.10's will give you more off the line power though, so it depends on what you want.
January 2, 20083.73's would be my choice
Edit: just to have a little more MPG though, 4.10s are my favs
January 4, 2008the only thing is 3.42 to 3.73 is not a big change so don't expect to feel a lot if you go this route you will notice the difference but not much of a difference
January 4, 2008If it were me I would go with the 4.10's for sure.
