February 4, 2011Hey fellows. I have a 03 1/2 ton regular cab short box I have been thinking of putting a plow on this truck and can never make up my mind. If I did I would use it as much as I can. It is a Z71 with 5.3 under the hood. Any thoughts or suggestions would be great.

February 4, 2011it would be fine but keep in mind that depending on usuage your trans will go out alot sooner especially since you have the 4l60e and not the l80e. Also your front end will wear faster due to extra weight and will drag down your MPG. if your cool with that then go for it.
February 4, 2011I would buy an old K series to plow with. Plowing snow will cut the life or your truck in half when used alot. as chevydude said the trans and front end will suffer severly. so will the cooling system, rears, electrical, etc. its alot of abuse.
DRIVE IT LIKE YOU STOLE IT !!!
February 4, 2011I replaced the trans at 70k and it has 100k on it now I mainly only use it for towing. I did the the trans my self and run amsoil in every thing. other than the trans the truck has been prefect and never really had any major break downs. It tows great I`ve towed 7000 or 8000 pounds long distance a couple of times now. Just tring to decided if I want to make a some extra money with it during the winter.
February 5, 2011Not worth it.. I feel. My dad used to have a plow on my truck was used for about 4-5 winters. It did ok for a half ton but I`ve got 150k on it now and needed new tranny at 120k new transfer case at 100k and my front end is pretty much shot. I also needed shocks at 100k. We mantence the he`ll outta our trucks too so just be prepared for stuff to break eventually. Also my truck frame has some pretty bad surface rust. All just personal feelings but do what you want it`s your truck your $$
February 5, 2011After reading all the above messages, I have one question for you. Are you going to make enough extra money to pay for all the possible repairs and still have enough to keep some for yourself?
February 5, 2011That`s was basically what I was saying^^^^
February 5, 2011Unless your doing plowing commercially... its not really worth getting a plow for your truck. I have landscaping business and do it full time in the winter. It beats the snot out of trucks. I try to take it easy on it but there is no really taking it easy during a snow storm. Constant up down left right with the plow... drains batteries and is hard on electrical like said above. Also the constant forward reverse is tough on trans parts and the rear. The truck i just bought for example is a 98 chevy 1500, on its 2nd trans, 2nd rear, 84,000 miles. The only truck that i have own that is a champ is my 82 K30 truck. IFS is not for made for plowing, you will wear parts out. Expect to pay at list 6 k for a good plow.. Western is what i would recommend. YOu can get used ones for like 1500-3 grand on cragslist just need the mount and wiring. I have meyers now but will upgrade soon. So figure you would need at least 5-10 K worth of gross just to break even. Remember you also have to pay yourself for the hours you put in and maintenance to the truck. Also if you do your own contracts your gonna need liability insurance, i have a million dollar coverage.
Thats alot of info to swallow but its all stuff you need to keep in mind.
